Tell us about Merry Mary in one sentence. Merry Mary is a heartwarming story about the powerful connection between a caring soul and an innocent child in need.

What do you think readers will enjoy most about your story? I hope readers, especially mothers, will identify with my protagonist’s desperate longing for a child and empathize with the decisions she makes. I also believe they will enjoy the close relationship Scottie shares with her brother, Will.

Are you working on a new novel? Yes, the sequel to Merry Mary, which I plan to release in Spring 2016. My currently untitled WIP is a full-length romantic political suspense starring Scottie, Will and the charming Guy Jordan.

Who or what was the inspiration for your story? I created my protagonist, photojournalist Scottie Darden, out of my love for photography and my desire to see the world. Understanding some of the technical aspects of photography adds credibility to my story. All of my plots focus on familial relationships. My first novel, Saving Ben, which I wrote as a tribute to my brother who died of a drug overdose in 1999, depicts a college-aged brother and sister. Her Sister’s Shoes portrays three middle-age sisters struggling to balance the demands of career and home while remaining true to themselves. Scottie Darden shares a close relationship with her brother In Merry Mary and the upcoming sequel. Certain aspects of their relationship remind me of my brother and me, but mostly I created them out of the special bond between my own children, who are close in age—21 and 20—as well as spirit.

What is your favorite thing to do to get ready for the holidays?

Definitely not shopping. Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, I put my small artificial tree up in the corner of my kitchen, where I spend most of my time, and decorate it with food-related ornaments. I enjoy this tree so much more than the live tree I put up in the living room, which stresses me out and makes me a bah humbug.

What is your favorite holiday . . .

Movie? I’ve seen The Holiday with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black at least a dozen times. Jack Black is lovable. Cameron Diaz wears the most amazing clothes. And Jude Law steels my heart every time when he cries at the end.

Novel? The Christmas Train by David Baldacci. Disillusioned journalist Tom Langon meets a host of interesting characters as he travels from Washington to Los Angeles by train for Christmas.

Song? Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”

Tradition? It’s all about the food for my family. We have many traditions for the holidays, but our Christmas Eve meal is the most important. We invite the whole family over for a formal sit-down dinner. Even though we have the same dishes every year, everyone always raves about Emeril Lagasse’s Twice Baked Potato Casserole, which I thought you might enjoy.

10 large russet baking potatoes (about 7 pounds total)

8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 cup sour cream

1/2 cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons salt

1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

3/4 pound bacon, cooked until crisp and crumbled

1/2 pound sharp white Cheddar, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

3/4 pound mild Cheddar, grated (3 cups)

1/2 cup finely chopped green onions

3 eggs, lightly beaten

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Scrub the potatoes well and rinse under cool running water. Pat dry with paper towels and prick the potatoes in several places with a fork. Place the potatoes in the oven and bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until tender. Remove from the oven and set aside on a wire rack until cool enough to handle.

When the potatoes have cooled, cut each potato in half and, using a spoon or a melon baller, scoop the flesh out of the skins, leaving as little flesh as possible. Place the potato flesh in a large bowl and add 1 stick of the butter, the sour cream, heavy cream, salt, and pepper and mash until chunky-smooth. Add the bacon, cubed white Cheddar, half of the grated Cheddar, the green onions, and eggs and mix thoroughly.

Butter a 9 by 13-inch casserole with the remaining tablespoon of butter and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F.

Place the seasoned potato mixture in the prepared casserole and top with the remaining grated Cheddar. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until bubbly around the edges and heated through and the cheese on top is melted and lightly golden. Serve hot.

Journey Through Morowak: Kari Peterson — Book Promo

journey morowak

Fantasy / Adventure
Date Published: 4/25/15

It is medieval times in the land of Morowak.  Kings and Queens maintain sovereignty, and wielders of magic and fire breathing dragons are real.  Nobleman’s daughter, Arabella Wallington, is about to embark on a journey across the kingdom to meet her betrothed.  Stengar McKinnon is a titled soldier in the King’s army and she is assured a life of wealth and bliss. Arabella is herself a gifted war maiden, yet she follows her father’s orders and employs someone to protect her along the perilous crossing.  She chooses a man named Briol, whose magical abilities are tested throughout their adventure, and an enigmatic bond forms between them. Briol realizes there is something unique about Arabella, and it is brought to light.  A new unforeseen path now lies ahead.  This journey challenges everything Arabella has ever known.

**

She looked at him with a storm brewing behind her eyes.  She turned away before he could see the tears beginning to form.  He had made himself vulnerable telling her the piece of his past; she could do the same with a piece of her future.  “I go to Dragon Crest to meet my betrothed.  He is in the King’s army, and it is of my father’s arrangement that we are to wed.”
It was as though she told of her own death.  “And yet, it sounds as though you do not wish to marry him.”
“No, I do not.  I know that once I am his wife, I will no longer be able to continue what I have fought for these last few years.  Like I mentioned before, I cannot have both.  What I want is to continue fighting for the cause, but I cannot defy my father.  It would be as if I defied the King himself, and I will not do so.  I have given my word and must now honor it.”  A tear rolled silently down her cheek.
Briol knew then Arabella was to be a part of his life.  As what, he could not yet tell.  All he knew was that he had grown to care for her and he would forever be her confidant.  “But you deserve to have both, m’lady.  If you do not wish to marry this man, then do not marry him.  Perhaps your father would understand if you tell him how unhappy it would make you. But do not lay down your bow.  I dare say you will lose your fire entirely should you give up your life’s work.”
Arabella stopped her horse.  “And do you truly believe a proud warrior of the King would tolerate having a war maiden for a wife?  Do you think he would stand in our doorway awaiting my arrival and rejoice each time I return home from protecting the kingdom when he was home training with his men?  It is supposed to be him taking the lead while I dotingly wait for him.  There is no resolution to this, Briol.  I have fought my father for a year now.  He will not see the day where I give up the marriage to a worthy man to fight alongside him.  I have no choice.”  She kicked her horse and they continued on.

I am not your average gal.  I didn’t grow up playing with Barbies or dressing in my mother’s clothes, jewelry or makeup.  I drove my matchbox cars over obstacle courses, climbed trees, built forts, dreamt of owning my morowak Author Picown horse, and pretended to be an elven princess.  I continued to live my life on my terms, while staying true to my old fashioned values and respect.  After completing high school, I took on a full-time job and put myself through college.  In just under three years, I earned a degree in computers.  I try to use that knowledge as often as I can.

In 2006, before I had even discovered my passion for writing, I married a wonderful man named Mark.  Our love story is blissfully unique.  We now live in Washington State with our three rambunctious boys, a beautiful chocolate lab, a bouncy min pin, and a tubby tailless kitty.  I am as passionate about my books as I am of my family.  This is exactly where I’m supposed to be right now.

Gotcha! by Eldon Taylor: Book Blitz

For more than a century, a silent battle has been raging for the territory of your mind. The weapons are so covert that the masses have remained unaware of their use. So effective are these tactics that even when the victims are told what is happening, and they make some show of being outraged, they nevertheless allow it to continue. Like a virulent virus, the effects are spreading, exerting a stronger control over a greater number of people on a daily basis—and we can only wish this was all just fiction!
In Gotcha! Eldon Taylor explores the 24/7 bombardment of information designed to win the hearts and minds of the public. He demonstrates how new sound-bytes are championed into personal awareness, becoming memes of the culture. All of this results in framing and reframing classical positions thereby causing adjustments to personal values and history itself. Your very decision process is being managed and manipulated, and the quest for discovering your real self becomes exponentially more difficult, if not impossible as a result.
Gotcha! exposes the arrival of the Orwellian age in full-blown technicolor. In laying bare the current uses of the many sophisticated techniques, Eldon reveals what it is we need to do in order to avoid allowing others to puppet our thoughts—“What was your last original thought?” Take back your power, take back your hearts and minds, and learn what it means to be truly free!
Eldon Taylor’s philosophy can best be encompassed by this quote from his New York Times best seller, Choices and Illusions:
“Many believe that self-help and self improvement is about rags to riches, failure to success, and so forth, when indeed it is the beginning of a journey into self- discovery . . . Inside every human being is an eternal truth and a life purpose. Using our mind power is simply starting the engine on that journey of self-discovery and highest self actualization.”
About the Author

Writing From Two POVS (Point of View):

I had a blast writing The Summer Marked (book two in the Winter People series), but mostly because I got to create the story from two different characters’ points of view. Kadie and Salome are SUCH different people. Kadie is more bad ass and hardcore, where Salome, who can be tough if she needs to, is a more “soft” kind of character. She kind of wears her heart on her sleeve and cares SO much about people. So it was nice being able to see how each character reacted to their environments.

But these two girls are both in very different types of places within Faerie. Kadie has been dropped right into something out of a horror flick or a fairytale gone wrong. Winter is filled with so much darkness, violence, and nightmarish stuff—a very macabre place. It was tough to write Kadie’s character, because we see how all this evilness is starting to break her down. She’s struggling to remain strong and protect her friend at all costs. But her whole situation seems helpless. It’s like every ray of hope that she has just keeps getting sucked away.

Salome, on the other hand is in Summer. When I was creating Summer all that kept popping into my head was something out of Tolkien novel, kind of like Rivendell. Summer is a HUGE contrast from Winter. It’s beautiful, with fountains, waterfalls, flowers, trees, castles etc. But underneath all the beauty there is a danger for Salome as well—and she learns quickly that not everything that’s “pretty” is nice. She has her own battles to fight, especially since not all the Fae like humans. She trying to find her place in a world where she really doesn’t totally belong or fit into. I had a different kind of fun writing her character. I liked showing her contrast from Kadie. How she had her own “horrors” and political issues she was dealing with. But also showing her grow more of a backbone and into her own so to speak.

The great thing about duo povs is being able to give the reader a bigger look at the setting and characters your writing about. To give them an idea of things outside just the main protagonist’s thoughts. I seriously love this book and hope the readers do as well.

Book & Author Details:
End of Day by Summer Lane
(The Zero Trilogy #3)
Publication date: October 9th 2015
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult
Synopsis:

The end has come.

Elle Costas and her dog, Bravo, have survived the dangers of Hollywood and escaped the clutches of Slaver Territory. The apocalypse has been cruel, and the wasteland of California has forced them to seek shelter in a civilian refugee camp at a place called Bear Mountain.

Here, they meet Cheng, a mysterious boy with the skills of a samurai, and Luli, a steampunk warrior with a thirst for vengeance. But friends cannot always be trusted. When a horrific tragedy befalls Bear Mountain, Elle and Bravo come face to face with their most dangerous enemy yet.

Betrayal and heartbreak threaten to destroy the bonds of friendship. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Run, or be caught.
Kill, or be killed.
Fight, or be forced to surrender.

The end of the day will change everything.
Will Elle and Bravo survive?

The explosive, thrilling conclusion to the #1 Bestselling Zero Trilogy by Summer Lane.

The Mysterious Cheng, End of Day’s Male Lead

Before I talk about Cheng, I’d just like to point out that the real male lead in End of Day has always been – and will always be – Bravo the bomb dog. And now that I’ve stated that, let’s talk about Cheng!

Cheng is a handsome, Asian boy with the skills of a samurai warrior. His past is mysterious, and his humor is a bit dry. I originally had planned to have Cheng play a very different role than who he is in the novella today. However, Elle and the story took over. It became apparent to me that Cheng’s role would have to change. I’m glad it did. I think his development, as well as his relationship with Elle, turned out extremely well – and I think it’s very realistic.

My wish was that Elle would never become dependent on anyone for survival. I especially did not want her to fall in love with a boy, and suddenly become infatuated with the idea of romance. Whether or not she has a romantic relationship with Cheng, I can’t say. But I can guarantee that no matter what happens, Elle’s strong nature is never compromised, and neither is Bravo’s.

I’m excited to share Cheng with my readers, especially because this book will tie into the Collapse Series in a very surprising way!

The rising socioeconomic toll of diabetes, in particular the Type 2 form of the disease, is reverberating around the world. A disease that has sporadically plagued mankind for centuries seems to have increased in prevalence in tandem with rapid economic transitions, notably in countries with the highest number of diabetics such as China and the USA.

This resource guide is comprised of information about diabetes in those countries as well as in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Africa. In addition, the latest antidiabetic therapies and infectious comorbidities associated with the disease are discussed in separate chapters. Scattered throughout the guide are fictional scenarios about challenges diabetics and their doctors might face in individualizing recommended management algorithms.

Diabetes and Pernicious Anemia

Pernicious Anaemia society members (a UK-based non-profit organization) will already be familiar with Martyn Hooper’s book,”Pernicious Anaemia: the Forgotten Disease -the causes and consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency”(1). Briefly, a complicated immune orchestra destroys cells in the stomach lining, increasing gastric pH, thereby allowing bacteria (normally suppressed by low pH) to thrive, and possibly interfere with absorption of indispensable micronutrients, including vitamin B12 (2). The net result of progressive inflammation is vitamin B12 deficiency, otherwise known as pernicious anemia (PA).

What happens when this misguided attack on the stomach lining is accompanied by a second autoimmune/comorbid disease attacking a different organ in the body? This prospect is increasingly likely, given the rise in chronic diseases in aging populations. Stomach problems that may occur

concurrently with the insidious progression from autoimmune gastritis to PA, can sometimes be a clinical signal of damage to another organ tucked behind the stomach, i.e. the pancreas. The pancreas secretes insulin, a critical hormone that assists the body in absorbing glucose and other nutrients from food. Insulin and its precursors are also targets for autoimmune attack, leading to Type 1 or “juvenile” diabetes, a condition affecting 5-10% (3) of all diabetics. Adult-onset or type 2 diabetes (more information can be found in the Diabetes Portfolio [4]), that accounts for 90% (5) of all diabetic cases, occurs as a consequence of insufficient insulin production or resistance of the body’s tissues to normal or higher amounts of this hormone.

While PA is thought of as an under- or misdiagnosed disease (present in up to 2% of the general population) (6), for a variety of reasons (2) the number of known diabetics total more than 371 million across the globe (7). Autoimmune gastritis and PA are increased up to 5-fold in Type 1 diabetics (6). Moreover, metformin, a popular, oral antidiabetic medication, may contribute to vitamin B12 deficiency (8). These points underscore the need for a holistic approach in the management of PA and co-occurring illnesses.

Praise for Perspectives on Type 2 Diabetes by Zeena Nackerdien:

Type 2 diabetes, characterized by the body’s progressive inability to utilize insulin, is rapidly approaching a prevalence of one in ten (9.3% in 2014) in both the U.S. and China. This silent epidemic manifests itself initally as a rise in blood sugar.
Dr. Nackerdien found herself challenged by signs of the early stages of this condition, and has produced an excellent summary of early intervention goals and guidelines. This “translation” of technical information to an understandable guideline format is a must-have for real people who find themselves on the cusp of this debilitating condition.”- Curt, Amazon Reviewer

Who are the groups likely to be in the frontlines of either administering or receiving anti-HIV/AIDS-containing treatments for this disease and any associated comorbidities? The answer is frontline healthcare professionals, lay educators, and patients, especially in high-disease burden countries such as South Africa. While the reinvigorated national response to HIV/AIDS underscores the country’s commitment to the health crisis, the socioeconomic costs are likely to have a lasting impact on its citizens.

I have compiled a resource kit outlining some of the challenges faced in the treatment of patients with HIV, TB, and diabetes. In addition, the kit contains disease management and prevention tips suited for discussions with healthcare professionals, particularly in resource-poor settings.

About the Book

After his heroic battle against the Deathlords on the Ghost Planet, Jack Finnegan is looking forward to arriving at Omnicron Prime, the capitol planet of the Galactic Regalus Empire -the largest and most advanced civilization in the universe.

Things are looking bright for Jack. He has his unconventional group of friends, his mystical spaceship, and the girl of his dreams -Princess Anna. Not to mention a secret mission that could save Earth and everyone he cares about.

But things get complicated when he arrives at Omnicron. Not only is Jack uncomfortable being thrust into the spotlight for his courageous actions to save the universe, but he soon finds life in the Empire isn’t everything he’d dreamed it would be.

His friends abandon him to pursue their own interests. Greedy and cunning politicians conspire to steal his spaceship. Even his relationship with Anna is strained now that she’s gone from being “the girl next door” to the most powerful woman in the universe.

But beneath all that lies a new and terrifying threat from the Deathlords. A threat that grows in secret, slowly spreading throughout the Regalus Empire like a plague, and it threatens to destroy from within the only thing powerful enough to stop the Deathlords and their malicious rampage throughout the galaxy -the Empire itself.

Worst of all -Jack is the only one who knows about this new threat, and no one will believe his warnings.

Suddenly, the Empire is no longer safe for Jack and his friends. Even the people they’ve come to rely on the most can no longer be trusted. As those he’s sworn to protect turn against him, how can Jack hope to save the day?

Fighting the Deathlords was one thing. Fighting the “good guys” is quite another. Will Jack be able to find the strength to be the hero the universe needs?

Or will he finally be defeated by this Secret Army?

5 Things That Make A Sci-Fi Novel Worth Reading

Science Fiction is a lot like pizza.  Even when it’s bad, it can still be enjoyable.  But there are a few things which make some science fiction truly great.  As a sci-fi author myself, these are the top 5 things I look for when reading science fiction and fantasy novels, which lets me know that what I’m reading is going to be great…

#5:  There’s a memorable bad guy – Lots of novels in the sci-fi genre tend to fall into the “Chosen One vs. Dark One” trap, where you have a hero that can do no wrong, and a villain who’s so evil, even Hitler would be like “Whoa, that guy is bad.”  Admittedly, a hero is only as good as the villain he’s up against, so it’s important to have a strong bad guy in the story.  But bad guys who are unique, have reasonable justifications for doing bad things, and are essentially just “good guys” for the opposite side, are always far more fun and interesting to read about than Professor Evil McEvil.

#4:  There’s a certain level of realism – Admittedly, sci-fi and fantasy don’t have to be realistic.  But nothing takes a reader out of a story quicker than characters or technology which just doesn’t behave in a way that is believable.  Would someone really shrug off their whole planet being destroyed like nothing happened?  Would a guy really find a woman with three eyes and a tail attractive?  Are the laws of physics really that important that the main character can’t go for a space-walk naked?  When a story respects realism, it just makes the whole tale more enjoyable.

#3:  There is a fleshed out universe to explore – a huge part of good sci-fi and fantasy is “worldbuilding.”  You want the setting in which a story takes place to feel like it could really exist.  This means having details which build the world and make it feel real.  Things like topography, geography, governments, laws, vehicles, technology, religion, media, etc. are all vital to having a great setting for a story.  If a sci-fi story is set in an advanced future and no one is watching TV or movies, playing games on phones, and locations/environments are all exactly the same, then something is wrong.

#2:  Characters have names you can pronounce – One thing that immediately takes me out of a story I’m reading is a character whose name is so off-the-wall, there’s no way I could ever figure out how to pronounce it.  These names typically feature lots of apostrophes (because what’s more alien than apostrophes, am I right?) and an abundance of consonants like “Y” and “Z”, and maybe even the occasional odd character like an upside-down question mark.  Just because an alien is an alien doesn’t mean he has to have an alien name.  (I’m looking at you, Xaghhh’I’k’luyyy’zchacha.)

#1:  There’s some cool magic or science – Part of the fun of sci-fi and fantasy are the futuristic/mystical elements a reader gets exposed to.  Stories with space ships, quantum physics, time travel, faster than light travel, magic, and all that neat stuff are always more enjoyable in this genre than stories which are so based in reality, you feel like you’re reading more of a biography than a fiction novel.  This genre is about letting one’s imagination run wild!  So let it!

excerpt:

The nightmare came again last night.

The cast-off thoughts of an incubus haunt me and press me and smother me while I sleep. Recurring and mutating, but always returning to taunt me. It calls me out of the Fog.

In the dream, I am running. It is very dark and the only thing I can see is the dim outline of a house. It resembles the home I lived in growing up. The home of one of me, anyway. It’s a little two-story white Victorian cottage with green shutters and trim, only three feet tall. There are lights on inside and the tiny door swings open for me. With every step I take I shrink, until I am almost small enough to fit through the front door. Something is hard upon my heels. Someone calls my name. This time, I can’t quite remember if the voice calls for Tennyson or Marissa. I’m almost home, almost up the front steps and through the door. But I never quite make it.

My face was wet with tears when I woke up, my heart beating like a drum in my chest, a sour taste in my mouth. Despite feeling like someone was in the room watching me, I was alone. I was conscious of the ever-present camera, but it was dark. I put my hand on my chest and willed my heart to slow down.

The first time I had the dream, weeks ago now, Giles was there beside me, suddenly turning on the bedside lamp. The glare hurt my eyes. “Tennyson, are you all right?” He reached for my wrist to take my pulse. He wore a T-shirt and silk boxer shorts. “What is it?”

interview:

Tell us about this story.

In The Dollhouse in the Crawlspace, Tennyson Claxton is a young woman who finds herself in a memory research institute, after being in a near-fatal car accident.  In her memories her eyes are green, but in the mirror her eyes are brown. Her memories come and go. She finds she has a fiancé she doesn’t like, a family she doesn’t remember. With multiple deaths around her, she must risk danger to discover her true self.

What living person do you most admire?

I don’t know her name but she’s the woman you see everywhere. She’s the woman who’s holding everything together in spite of life’s constant blows. She’s a survivor. I see her at the grocery store, in the park, at church. She’s everywoman.

What is your most prized possession?

My brain. Without that, I have nothing.

Who is your favorite fictional character of all time?

It changes over time. When I was a child it might have been Cathy Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights, or Jane Eyre.  But I reread an Elizabeth Peters book last week. So this week, my favorite character is Amelia Peabody.

Who’s the favorite character that you created?

They’re all my favorite characters as I write them. But it is a tie between Lacey Smithsonian from my Crime of Fashion mysteries and Tennyson Claxton from The Dollhouse in the Crawlspace.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness?

I don’t dwell on perfect happiness. I’d settle for general happiness. With my husband, my friends, good books, conversation and theater.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would like to be more organized to be able to write faster and produce more books in shorter periods in time.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Not exactly what I like to dwell on. But I think misery involves poverty, lack of opportunity, and no way out. The lowest misery is being without hope.

Why do you write?

Writing is my strongest skill.

Where would you most like to live?

I spent many years in Virginia and worked in Washington, D.C. It’s the location I write about the most.  I fell in love with the East Coast and would love to call it home again. At least part-time.

What is your motto?

Never give up.

In Love in the Time of Murder, the Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives face their toughest case yet. Delilah, or Dee as she wishes everyone would just call her already, is the granddaughter of one of the knitting detectives and her life is in a bit of a shambles. She finally manages to pry herself away from her husband’s clutches, move out on her own, and start her own business. But then her estranged husband is found dead and she’s the number one suspect. The Gray-Haired Knitting Detectives aren’t about to let one of their own get sent to the slammer and jump at the chance to search for the true killer. As if Dee doesn’t have enough problems, the knitting detectives decide that Delilah being a widow is the perfect opportunity to find her a new man and decide to put their matchmaking skills to use. Will Dee end up in prison for a murder she didn’t commit or will she be taking another walk down the aisle?
TEASERS
Everyone stops talking when I enter the kitchen. Oh great a confrontation. I do so love confrontations; especially when I’m dressed in sleep shorts and a tank top with no bra. It gives me no end of confidence to confront people with my boobs hanging out.
“You can hit Noel if it makes you feel better,” Izzy offers and Noel just shakes his head at her.
I have no idea if she’s serious or not. “Um no, I don’t believe in violence.” Obviously.
“Pick me. Pick me!” Jack shouts as jumps up and down with his hand raised in the air. “I would love to get my hands on Noel,” he says in a provocative voice and winks outrageously. I can’t help but laugh. Damien reaches over and smacks his hand down. “Behave or I’ll throw out your secret Ben & Jerry’s stash.”
“The grandmas scare you? They’re a bunch of old ladies that go to church and knit together. What’s scary about that?”
Tommy shakes his head. “You have no idea what they’re capable of.” I shrug. Is he serious? “They put ex-lax in the brownies at church!”
I don’t like the way Tommy’s acting like a caveman, telling me I’m going to dance with him. And I really, really don’t like the way my hand tingles where he touches it and my belly warms as he pulls me to the dance floor.
Jack shakes his head at me. “You don’t know me yet but know this – I don’t lie. If I didn’t think you were beautiful, I’d be talking about your clothes. Which are atrocious by the way. You do know we have an employee discount, right?”
The detective shakes my kindle. “Why are you obsessed with true crime novels, Mrs. Clark?”
I snort. “I also read shifter romance novels, but I’m pretty sure I’m not a werewolf.” And with that, I’m done. “Am I under arrest?”
“Shoot! I’m going to fry for Brock’s murder.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Damien speaks for the first time. “They don’t use the electric chair in Oklahoma. It’s lethal injection.”
“Oh my gosh, this place is fancy,” gushes Martha as we walk in. She notices a few women working at desks behind the glass wall separating the waiting room from the main work floor. “Do you think there are any single gals working here? Bobby needs a wife.” Her eyes zoom in on the receptionist and she marches right on over to her. “Hi! I’m Martha. I’m a matchmaker. Are you single?”
The bouncer shakes his head. “Um no, I can’t let you in.” He points to Grandma and her posse. “They are instant boner killers. Not good for business, man.”
Betty huffs. “You’re going to let in two gay men but not us?”
He shrugs. “I don’t care if the gay dudes want to make a stripper sandwich. But the customers are going to run out of here like their asses are on fire the second this AARP bus arrives.”
About the Author
I was born and raised in Wisconsin, but think I’m a European (and have the EU passport to prove it!). After spending my senior year of high school in Germany, I developed a bad case of wanderlust that is yet to be cured. My flying Dutch husband and I have lived in Ohio, Virginia, the Netherlands, Germany and now Istanbul. We still haven’t decided if we want to settle down somewhere – let alone where. I’m leaning towards somewhere I can learn to surf even though the hubby thinks that’s a less than sound way to decide where to live. Although I’ve been a military policewoman, a commercial lawyer, and a B&B owner, I think with writing I may have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. That’s assuming I ever grow up, of course. Between playing tennis, running much slower than I would like, trying to adopt every stray dog within a 5-mile radius, traveling to exotic new locales, singing off tune, drinking entirely too many adult beverages, addictively watching new movies and reading books like they are going out of style, I write articles for a local expat magazine and various websites, review other indie authors’ books, write a blog about whatever comes to mind and am working on my seventh book.

More, More Time by David B. Seaburn: Excerpt

General / Literary Fiction
Date Published: July 18, 2015

Maxwell Ruth, a cantankerous, old high school history teacher falls down his basement stairs and soon thereafter starts hearing “The Words” over and over again— endingtimeendingtimeendingtime. His life is changed forever.

In this story we learn about the lives, loves, and losses of Max, Hargrove and Gwen Stinson, Beth and Bob Hazelwood, and Constance Young. They are lively, funny, at times; a little bit lost or wounded, yet resilient and hopeful.  They are wrestling with life’s most challenging issues, including, abuse, loss, infidelity, aging, secrecy and what gives life meaning. And, like all of us, they would like more, more time to find the answers to life’s most important questions. The clock, though, is always ticking and time is always short.

Excerpt

In the days after Maxwell Ruth fell down his basement stairs, he begins to hear something alarming. He decides to tell his best friend, Hargrove Stinson, even though Hargrove has gone through a similar problem when his wife, Gwen, started hearing things after their daughter, Sally, died.

“But something’s wrong.” Max grimaced, his eyes wide.

“Something’s wrong? What are you talking about?”

“Not long after I fell, I started hearing things.”

“What things?” Hargrove thought of Gwen. “Did you hear that?” she’d often say, fear in her eyes. His heart skipped a beat.

“I don’t know. It’s hard to explain. I don’t want you to think I’m…”

“What are you hearing, Max?” Hargrove’s words were more clipped than he had intended.

“It’s like, these words.”

“Someone talking?”
“No, nothing like that. It’s just this repetitive…” Max’s voice trailed off.

“A repetitive what?”

“You’ve been through enough of this…”

“Look, Max, tell me what’s going on.” Hargrove’s eyes didn’t move.

Max looked out the window again.

“Words. I’m hearing words. Woke me up after I got home from the hospital. Words slung together over and over again.” Max shrugged, his jaw went slack. “They go away. They come back. I don’t know what the hell it is.”

“Words, it sounds like words?”

Hargrove’s back stiffened. The hair on his neck prickled. “Listen. I hear her,” Gwen would say. “It’s Sally, I’m sure of it. She needs me.” He scrutinized Max’s face, looking for the terror, for the cold panic so familiar to Hargrove, but it wasn’t there.

“What did your doctor say? Did you tell him you’re hearing voices?”

“Jesus Christ, I’m not hearing voices!” Max threw the marker on the floor and walked to the window again. He wiped his face with his hand. Hargrove went to him and reached for his shoulder but then withdrew his hand.

“Okay, okay, you’re not hearing voices. You’re hearing words.”

“Yes, I’m hearing words.” Max turned around to face his friend.

“What words?”

“One word is ‘ending’ and the other word is ‘time.’” Max shrugged his shoulders.

“Time ending?” said Hargrove, his voice a monotone.

“When I hear it, it’s ‘ending time.’ And they run together like they’re a single word playing on a continuous loop: endingtimeendingtimeendingtime.” Max frowned and nodded his head to one side as he said this.

“That’s it?” Max shook his head. The corner of Hargrove’s mouth twitched slightly. “What did the doctor say?”

“Well,” said Max, looking at the floor. “I didn’t exactly tell him.”

“Jesus, Max.”

“Look, that’s all I need. A doctor thinking I’ve gone off the deep end.” Max paused. “I don’t need a friend thinking I’ve gone off the deep end either.”

“Of course not.” Hargrove cleared his throat. Max put his hand on his briefcase as if he were about to leave. “But, Jesus, Max, you should have told your doctor about this. I mean, maybe something can be done. Maybe if you had a CT or an MRI, they could find the cause. It has to be something.”

“Had those. Nothing’s wrong.”

Hargrove was quiet.

“You think I’m crazy, don’t you?” said Max.

Hargrove studied Max’s face, his full cheeks and wide eyes seeming almost childlike.
